FG plans to give every secondary student a laptop

24/11/2006 - 13:54:08
Every child entering secondary school will be given a laptop computer under radical education reforms proposed by Fine Gael.

The party leader Enda Kenny said that course material should be re-designed around new technology.

Unveiling his party's education plans to a Fine Gael lunch in Dublin, Enda Kenny said he wants to use technology to transform teaching and learning.

He's proposing to set up a €100m Schools Excellence Fund to recruit new teachers and fund local initiatives.

Standardised literacy and numeracy tests would introduced for all children, and teachers skills would be reassessed every five years.

Teachers in the most challenging schools would get premium payments.

He said that given extra demands being imposed on secondary schools, either the school day or the school year should be lengthened.
