Irish rate of HIV among drugs users in EU top ten

23/11/2006 - 11:47:49
Ireland has one of the highest rates of HIV among injecting drug users in the EU.

That's one of the findings of the latest report on the state of the drugs problem in Europe, which had mixed news for Ireland.

We are ranked 10th out of 22 countries surveyed on cannabis use. Under 12% of Irish people aged between 15 and 24 use cannabis regularly, that's half the number of regular users in the UK.

Only 0.8% of Irish people aged between 15 and 34 use amphetamines regularly, this is compared to 2.7% in the UK.

However, Ireland has the fifth highest rate of cocaine use, and over 2% of young adults use ecstasy regularly - much lower than in the UK, but higher than Germany, France or Italy.
