Second Mayo spell for O'Mahony
John O'Mahony has been announced as the new Mayo senior football manager at a special press briefing tonight.
The Kilmovee man, who teaches at St. Nathy's College in Ballaghaderreen and who is also a Fine Gael candidate for next year's General Election, was officially unveiled at the briefing in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar.
Taking over from the axed Mickey Moran, it will be O'Mahony's second spell in charge of Mayo. He managed his native county to the 1989 All-Ireland SFC final before they were beaten by Cork.
He also managed Mayo's Under-21s to an All-Ireland title in 1983 before his stewardship of the seniors saw them pocket back-to-back Connacht SFC titles in 1988 and 1989.
He had success as Leitrim boss when they went on to claim their first ever Connacht senior crown in 1994, while he is undoubtedly most famous for guiding Galway to successive All-Ireland senior championships in 1998 and 2001.
As a player, O'Mahony was an All-Ireland winner with the Mayo minors and Under-21s in 1971 and 1974 respectively.
This year he has been involved as an advisor to both Ballaghaderreen and St. Brigid’s, who have qualified for the Connacht club final.
Ballina's Tommy Lyons, former county star Martin Carney, the well-known RTÉ GAA pundit, and Kieran Gallagher of Swinford, who was a selector under Moran, will form O'Mahony's backroom team.
