Survey: Border counties' roads more dangerous
20/11/2006 - 07:25:55A major new survey has found that the border region has a higher proportion of fatal and serious road traffic collisions when compared with the rest of Ireland.
The research, part-funded by the EU, draws on statistics from both the Gardaí and the PSNI.
The study found that a total of 127 people died in single vehicle crashes in the border counties and in Co Meath, from 2001 to 2004 - this is one death every 11.5 days.
The most common age category for those responsible for crashes is 20 to 24, with alcohol the main contributory factor in fatal collisions.
The study also uncovered casual attitudes to drink driving, with more than half of people questioned saying they would accept a lift with someone who had been drinking excessively.
