The Cabinet meeting today to discuss the Book of Estimates and prepare for the upcoming Budget.

The Estimates, which were published on Thursday, revealed that the government plans to increase spending by €4bn next year, topping €54.3bn.

At this morning's gathering in Government Buildings, ministers are discussing the finer details of their individual budgets for the coming year.

Funds for health are to increase by over €1bn, while the money for education is to rise by more than 7%.

Bertie Ahern and his Cabinet colleagues will use today's meeting to prepare for the Budget, and to discuss any further spending increases, or changes to the taxation system.

It will be the Government's last Budget before the election, and they will want it to make a significant impact on the electorate.

Budget day is Wednesday, December 6.
