Taoiseach defends level of Govt funding for local councils

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has defended the level of Government funding for local authorities around the country.

Opposition parties have criticised the amount of money set aside for city and county councils in yesterday's budget estimates.

They claimed car tax might be increased to meet the shortfall in funding, but Mr Ahern said today that he was aware of no such proposals.

Speaking in Dublin, he said the Government had given "large amounts of money" to local councils in the past five or six years and they would also do very well when the latest allocations are finalised in January.
