Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has announced details of his department's spending plans for next year.

The department received a 58% increase in its budget allocation yesterday, making it one of the biggest winners in the annual Book of Estimates.

Much of the money will pay for projects under the Government's Transport 21 plans, including €1.5bn on the national roads programme.

€45m will also go the Coastguard, €10m to reducing the driving-test backlog and €9m to improve rural transport.

Elsewhere, Dublin Bus will get 100 new buses by the end of January and Bus Éireann will get 160 new vehicles throughout 2007, while €28m will be invested in regional airports.
