CSO reports rise in long-term unemployment since last year

Long-term unemployment in Ireland has increased slightly over the past year, according to new statistics published by the CSO today.

An analysis of Live Register figures show that 30.5% of all claimants in October of this year were unemployed for a year or more, compared to 29.1% in October of last year.

The total number of long-term unemployed rose by just over 2,000 during this period, while the number of short-term claimants decreased by just over 2,500.

People in the 45-54 age group make the largest proportion of long-term unemployed (24.8%), while those under the age of 20 make up the smallest percentage (2.2%).
