Consumers back EU move to cap mobile roaming charges

More than two thirds of European mobile-phone users support new EU laws forcing telecom companies to slash roaming charges, according to a survey out today.

The European Commission survey of more than 200,000 people has also found that the figure rises to 78% among younger phone users.

The new EU laws are being introduced following the failure of mobile phone firms to voluntarily bring down roaming costs, which are often four times higher than the cost of a regular call.

Regulations capping such charges are currently being discussed by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
