Harney insists nursing home repayments will not be delayed

03/11/2006 - 11:05:30
Minister for Health Mary Harney has dismissed reports of a delay in the repayment of nursing home fees levied illegally between 1976 and 2004.

A total of around €1bn is expected to be paid out to elderly people and their relatives who were wrongly charged nursing home fees by the State.

Media reports claim the payments might not be processed as expected this month because of the HSE's failure to appoint an appeals officer to oversee the process.

However, speaking in Dublin today, Ms Harney said the officer would be appointed on time and the first payments would be made before the end of this month.
