Irwin branded 'showman' by BBC official

03/11/2006 - 19:45:46
Late Crocodile Hunter star Steve Irwin has been branded "a showman" by a BBC wildlife film-maker, outraging fans and family.

Alastair Fotherfill, the director of hit series Planey Earth, accuses the recently deceased father-of-two of being more interested in showing off than helping wildlife.

Fortherfill says: "Let's face it, Steve was a showman.

"Yes, he introduced a lot of people to natural history. But his basic stock in trade was: 'Aren't I brave, and animals are dangerous?'

"I'm not interested in human stars, only in animal stars"

Fotherfill's outburst comes two days after Irwin's widow Terri paid tribute to Planet Earth narrator David Attenborough at Britain's National Television Awards.
