The European Union will next year organise a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its inception, including a youth summit in Rome, where the EU’s founding treaty was signed in 1957, officials in Strasbourg said today.

The participants of the March youth summit, invited to discuss their views on the EU’s history and future, will be linked live to a special EU summit in Berlin and will be able to interact with EU leaders, said European Commission Vice President Margot Wallstrom.

The anniversary will also be celebrated with various exhibitions and a film festival, said Spanish EU politicians Alejo Vidal-Quadras Roca.

The European Parliament will set aside €5m, while the EU’s executive Commission will spend €3.5m on the celebrations, they said.
