Bush: Events in Iraq 'of serious concern'
With American casualties in Iraq at their highest levels in a year, President George Bush said today the “events of the past month have been a serious concern to me.”
If Iraq's mission weren’t vital to US security “I’d bring our troops home tomorrow” he added.
He said it remained critical that the United States “defeated the enemy” in what had become a long and brutal war.
“Our security at home depends on assuring that Iraq is an ally in the war on terror,” Bush said in the opening moments of a White House news conference less than two weeks before November 7 congressional elections.
He admitted this month has seen the highest US losses in Iraq since October 2005.
President Bush said he was very concerned about the recent wave of violence in Iraq and acknowledged that Iraqi civilians have suffered “unspeakable violence” .
But he added that Americans have no intention of standing in crossfire between rival factions in Iraq
