Redeveloped Ballymun welcomes 1000th family
25/10/2006 - 06:59:10The 1000th family to be rehoused as part of a massive redevelopment of the once notorious Ballymun suburb of Dublin will move into their new home today.
The landmark in the planned regeneration of the area will be celebrated by visiting dignitaries with tea and a giant 1000th ‘birthday’ cake.
More than €400m has been spent on pulling down the Ballymun flats – once a byword for bad planning and urban deprivation - and building new lower density housing in their place.
The renewal scheme is one of the biggest construction projects in Europe, according to the Government.
Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal Noel Ahern and Dublin Lord Mayor Councillor Vincent Jackson will present the 1000th family to be rehoused from the flats into the new homes with their keys.
