Govt urged to explain €170m spend on fibre-optic cables
20/10/2006 - 12:23:31The Green Party is calling on the Government to explain why €170m is being spent on fibre-optic telecom lines that may never be used.
Twenty-seven metropolitan area networks have already been constructed and a further 90 are due to be built in the next year in every town with a population of more than 1,500 people.
€80m has been spent to date, but the networks had only turned over €3.5m in revenue up to the end of April this year.
Green TD Eamon Ryan says the new lines are a waste of taxpayers money because they are not being connected properly and, as a result, are not being used.
