PSNI officers attacked in Belfast arrest

19/10/2006 - 07:44:41
PSNI officers came under attack with missiles and fireworks during an arrest operation in a staunchly republican area of west Belfast last night.

The officers had gone to the Ballymurphy area following a paramilitary-style punishment attack on a 19-year-old man at around 7.30pm.

The man was abducted from a house and bundled into a car before being driven to a nearby nature reserve and assaulted.

The PSNI subsequently moved into Ballymurphy and arrested a man after recovering a wooden bat and iron bars during a search of a car.

A firearm was also recovered during a follow-up search of another car.

During the operation, the officers came under attack with missiles and fireworks from a crowd of local youths who had gathered in the area.

No injuries have been reported.
