More than 400 motorists arrested for drink-driving last week

17/10/2006 - 13:26:09
Figures released today by the Garda Press Office today show that 411 motorists were arrested for drink-driving offences last week.

This is significantly higher than the average of 305 drink-driving arrests every week during the first six months of this year.

It is also higher than the 320 motorists who were arrested every week for drink-driving during the traditional Christmas crackdown on traffic offences.

Gardaí are warning motorists that they remain committed to tackling drink-driving as part of efforts to reduce the level of deaths and injuries on Ireland's roads.

Gardaí say enforcement activities in this area of road safety will continue to be prioritised and are urging motorists to make prior arrangements to avoid driving after consuming alcohol.
