Gardaí to target accident blackspots in speed-camera blitz

17/10/2006 - 07:44:54
Gardaí are reportedly planning to mount a major crackdown on speeding at 400 of the most dangerous stretches of road in the country.

Reports this morning say officers involved in the blitz have drawn up a list of almost 1,000 accident blackspots, 400 of which have been designated "red zones".

These areas will reportedly be specifically targeted by Gardaí from next month using their current array of fixed and mobile speed cameras.

This morning's reports say private operators will then take over the operation within 12 months, using 600 extra cameras.

Gardaí say motorists will be informed of the locations where the cameras are going to be because the purpose of the blitz is to reduce accidents by stopping people from speeding.
