17/10/2006 - 18:30:51
A state enterprise body opened up a new office in Canada today in a bid to grow Irish trade with the region.

Minister for Trade Micheál Martin said the opening of Enterprise Ireland’s 35th overseas office in Toronto represented a vast market opportunity for Irish firms.

“Canada is currently the 11th most important export market for Enterprise Ireland client firms. The opening of an Enterprise Ireland office in Toronto signals Enterprise Ireland’s commitment to assisting Irish firms to develop stronger business relationships and to increase Irish trade with Canada,” he said at the official opening.

“There is potential to increase Irish exports and develop partnerships between Irish and Canadian firms in knowledge-intensive sectors such as ICT, biotechnology and financial services.”

Enterprise Ireland said Irish companies benefit in accessing Canada’s 32 million strong-population in a number of ways through getting help in identifying target buyers, accessing specialist advisory services and using the body’s local business contacts and networks.

Nick Marmion, Canada Manager with Enterprise Ireland, said: “Enterprise Ireland will continue to fortify Irish industry’s relationship with Canadian businesses. The strength and value of deals emerging from this week’s Trade Mission is indicative of the future potential to increase trade with Canada.

“Irish companies doing business in Canada are likely to engage in strategic alliances, partnerships and licensing agreements with Canadian firms, as well as selling directly into the market.

“Enterprise Ireland’s Toronto offices provide a targeted knowledge offer for Irish companies expanding into the Canadian market or growing their business there.”
