EC warns Ireland over failure to protect natural habitats

Ireland could be facing massive fines from the European Commission for failing to protect endangered natural habitats and species.

The commission has today called on the Government to fully comply with two judgements at the European Court of Justice in relation to the matter.

It says Ireland has yet to fully meet a 1995 deadline to complete a list of protected nature sites and could face substantial monetary penalties if it fails to honour the court rulings.
