PDs deny Harney was aware of Ahern payments

05/10/2006 - 13:51:59
The Progressive Democrats have denied the Taoiseach's claim that former Tánaiste Mary Harney was aware he had received loans from friends in the 1990s.

The party says the remarks made in the Dáil by Bertie Ahern this morning were inaccurate.

However, Green Party chairman John Gormley is demanding that Ms Harney make a statement clarifying the situation and whether it affected her decision to step down as PD leader.

He said today that it was "quite clear" Ms Harney had "some inkling of what was coming down the tracks".

"We need to know exactly what she knew and when she knew it, because it could well have affected her decision to step down from the leadership of the PDs," he added.

"That has been the rumour around Leinster House for quite some time and it would appear at this stage that there was some substance to that rumour."
