McAleese to cheer on international team in Cyprus

President Mary McAleese is to cheer on the Republic of Ireland team during its Euro 2008 qualifier game with Cyprus in Nicosia on Saturday evening, it emerged tonight.

Mrs McAleese will be joined on the first-ever Irish state visit to the Mediterranean isle with Minister for the Environment Dick Roche.

The head of state will also carry out two days of engagements in Malta with Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern on Thursday and Friday.

She will meet dignitaries and officials in Valletta including President Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi.

She is also due to deliver an address to Maltese business leaders at the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise.

In Cyprus, the president will meet gardai serving with the United Nations Police.

She will be officially welcomed to Nicosia by President Tassos Papadopoulos on Monday and will receive the Golden Key of Nicosia.

Mrs McAleese will also deliver an address at the University of Cyprus on the theme, Europe’s New Horizons: An Irish Perspective.

Mr McAleese is also due to visit Northern Ireland next month for a number of official engagements.
