ICTU slams EU court ruling on equal pay for women

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has hit out at yesterday's controversial European Court of Justice ruling on pay for years of service.

The court upheld the existing law that allows employers to pay women less than their male colleagues if they have taken time out, over and above maternity leave, to look after their children.

ICTU spokesperson Sally-Anne Kinahan said today that the decision was a major setback to the campaign to end workplace discrimination.

She said the lack of provisions for paternity leave meant that women were much more likely to take time off for childcare and to suffer as a result of yesterday's ruling.
