Two men have appeared in court in Limerick charged with the murder of an 18 year-old man in the city nearly a year ago.

Shane Kelly (aged 18) of Oliver Plunkett Street, St Mary’s Park and Richard Treacy (aged 18) of St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, both in Limerick, appeared before Judge Tom O’Donnell at the city’s District Court.

Both men were charged with the murder of Darren Coughlan at Old Cratloe Road, Limerick, on November 4 last year.

The teenager from Pineview Gardens, Moyross, died several days after he suffered serious head injuries when he was beaten near the student accommodation complex of Limerick Institute of Technology.

The court today heard that neither of the accused made any reply when they were formally charged at Mayorstone garda station this morning.

Judge Tom O’Donnell heard that both accused were arrested this morning following directions from the office of the DPP.

He remanded both accused in custody to appear again before Limerick District Court on October 5 next.
