Ahern fighting for political life over Manchester payment

29/09/2006 - 07:23:40
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is fighting for his political life today amid growing concern about an £8,000 (€11,800) payment he received at a function in Manchester 12 years ago.

Yesterday, the Government agreed to hold a special Dáil debate next week to allow Mr Ahern to clarify details of the payment he received from a number of businessmen.

The seriousness of the situation hit home in the afternoon when Tánaiste Michael McDowell said the Progressive Democrats had significant concerns.

He said the Taoiseach must identify the donors involved, explain what the money was for and clarify if it was a political or personal donation.

Mr Ahern is expected to face further questions about the matter from the media when he attends the Ploughing Championships in Carlow later today.
