Businesses and individuals in debt to tune of €300bn

Irish businesses and individuals are now in debt the tune of almost €300bn, according to new figures published by the Central Bank today.

The bank says "private sector credit" increased by €3.6bn in the month of August, bringing total debt level to €297bn.

This is almost €70,000 for every man, woman and child in the country.

The figure represents a rise of 28.2% over the past 12 months, which is the lowest annual growth rate in a year.
