Pensioners allowed to earn €100 a week under new reforms

28/09/2006 - 08:28:58
Non-contributory pensioners will be allowed to earn up to €100 a week from today without it affecting their pension entitlements.

The move is part of a package of reforms being announced by Minister for Social and Family Affairs Seamus Brennan.

Elsewhere, 34,000 pensioners will receive increases of between €2.50 and €20 in their weekly payments, while the term "old-age pension" is also being formally changed to "state pension".

The lobby group Age Action has welcomed the changes, but says it still wants the state pension increased to 50% of the average industry wage in order to tackle poverty among pensioners.
