A 14-year-old boy, who was arrested for allegedly hi-jacking a car was today released on bail but he has been barred from getting into any motor vehicle unless he is accompanied by one of his parents.

The young boy was before the Dublin Children’s Court charged with travelling as a passenger in a stolen car, at Killshane Road, in Finglas, on September 20. He had been remanded in custody last week and was released today following a bail hearing.

Judge Catherine Murphy remanded the boy for a week pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The north Dublin boy, who was accompanied in court by his parents, was ordered to reside at his family home, obey a nightly curfew between 8pm and 7am and he was also barred from going to the Blanchardstown area.

Furthermore, Judge Murphy imposed another bail condition prohibiting the boy from being in “any mechanically propelled vehicle except when he is in the company of either of his parents".

The court had heard that further charges could be brought against the teen for allegedly hi-jacking the car, which was later crashed.

Garda Sergeant John O’Donovan said it was alleged that the owner of the car was approached by the teen, who had been holding a bottle. The teen allegedly opened the car door and threatened the driver who got out.

The car was alleged to have been driven away by another individual and the teen was carried in the vehicle as a passenger.
