Ahern insists Manchester payment did not breach rules
28/09/2006 - 15:20:49The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has insisted that he did nothing wrong in accepting £8,000 (€11,800) at a function in Manchester during the 1990s.
Mr Ahern revealed the payment earlier this week while trying to defuse the controversy surrounding the €50,000 he received separately from wealthy businessmen in 1993 and 1994.
Speaking in Co Cavan today, he said he had checked the guidelines on such matters and had acted within the rules that were in place at the time.
He said he was not attending an official function in his capacity as a minister and had paid his own way at the event.
