Cork chairman pays tribute to "gentleman" Allen

20/09/2006 - 07:53:35
Cork County Board chairman Mick Dolan was quick to praise John Allen, after the St. Finbarr's clubman officially stepped down as manager of the Cork hurlers last night.

Allen issued a statement, which was read out at last night's County Board meeting at Páirc Ui Chaoimh, confirming his decision to quit.

It read: "I wish to state that I will not be going forward for the position of Cork senior hurling team manager for the coming season. I have enjoyed two very fruitful years as Cork manager and I wish to thank the players, selectors and all the backroom for their assistance and support during the last two years.

"I also wish to acknowledge the support of Cork County Board during my time as manager.

"It was a great honour to be appointed to this most important position and I wish whoever takes this position all the very best in the future."

Addressing the club delegates present, Dolan acknowledged Allen's contribution to the Rebels' recent successes, saying: "John spent two years as selector under Donal O’Grady and then worked as head coach for the last two years. In those two years in his capacity as head coach, John brought us to two All-Irelands, winning in 2005, while he also won two Munster titles in 2005 and 2006.

"He has given great service to his county and has achieved quite a lot for us.

"Personally I got on very well with John over the years. I worked very closely with him when I was liaison officer for the hurling team, and we enjoyed a very good working relationship. He is a gentleman to his fingertips.

"It's a pity he has decided to step aside. I suppose when you’re there so long and when you have family and other commitments, it can be a demanding post," he admitted.

"All we can say is - ‘thanks John for everything you have done’."
