American players make charity contribution

20/09/2006 - 10:55:56
The American Ryder Cup team will again be distributing €2m to various charities under their agreement reached with the Professional Golfers’ Association of America.

Each member of the side, plus captain Tom Lehman, can contribute roughly €78,000 to the college or university of their choice, with the same amount going to a charity of their choice.

Since their Ryder Cup Outreach Programme began in 1999, around €8.2m has been donated.

Two players – Chris DiMarco and Jim Furyk – have given a sum to cancer charities. Darren Clarke’s wife Heather, of course, died of the disease on August 13.

Lehman said: “One of the special perks that comes with serving as captain or playing on the US Ryder Cup team is the opportunity to give back to the game of golf by supporting the college or university of one’s choice.

“This is an excellent vehicle to grow the game.”

Roger Warren, PGA of America president, added: “As we cheer on our US Ryder Cup team in the most compelling competition in golf we also are celebrating the difference that these players make to both supporting the future of the game and to charities within their respective communities.”

The European Ryder Cup team has no such scheme in place, but money is distributed to charity from the profits of each match.
