Protesting taxi drivers lift threat to target Ryder Cup
The three main taxi unions have agreed to lift their threat to disrupt the Ryder Cup at the K Club this weekend.
Taxi drivers protesting over the introduction of a new fare structure had threatened to go on strike during the event as part of their campaign.
However, after a meeting today, their unions said no action would be taken to disrupt the prestigious tournament.
The protesting drivers, most of them based in Dublin, have already held a series of work stoppages to highlight their opposition to the impending fare reforms.
The changes will lead to the abolition of luggage charges and the special fee for pick-ups at Dublin Airport.
Drivers who use the rank at the airport will also be hit by a new €500 levy.
The taxi unions are meeting the Dublin Airport Authority today to seek a deferral of the levy pending a possible review of the reforms due to come into force next Monday.
They say they will refuse to use the airport if the fee is not withdrawn.
