Journalists call for the proposed privacy bill to be amended

The National Union of Journalist is expected to call on the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to withdraw the proposed privacy bill amid serious concern that it will inhibit their work.

Members are to attend a conference in Dublin later today to discuss the implications of the bill

A media law expert has prepared a paper highlighting a number of deficiencies including its provisions on court coverage.

"The achievements in the area of libel reform are negated by the publication of a privacy bill published without consultation,” NUJ secretary Seamus Dooley said.

“It's the result of an expert group that did not have time to engage with the public and which contain sweeping provisions which in our view would inhibit investigative journalism."
