Card fraud down thanks to Chip and Pin

16/09/2006 - 08:35:17
Incidents of card fraud have decreased as a result the introduction of smartcard technology, according to officials.

The Irish Payment Services Organisation has recorded a 65% reduction in card skimming in the first half of this year.

The new method, also known as Chip and Pin, was introduced to replace the older signature based technology to combat fraud in the country.

IPSO spokesperson Una Dillon said the new statistics proved that Chip and Pin is much more secure than the previous system.

"I think a lot of people were worried about what we refer to as shoulder surfing, people standing behind them when they're keying in their number,” she said.

“I think certainly a lot of retailers actually have a piece of plastic over the pin pad so when people are keying it in its difficult to see it from behind. We also continue to encourage people to cover the pin pad during transactions as well."
