Calls for non-compulsory retirement age
The private sector is being encouraged to allow staff who reach the age of 65 to stay on in the workplace for as long as they remain capable of performing their duties
A new survey has revealed that elderly staff are more reliable and productive than their younger counterparts
The European Central Bank meanwhile said later retirement could prove essential if the eurozone is to avoid a plunge in economic growth because of its aging population.
Robin Webster of Age Action Ireland said more and more people want greater flexibility as regards the period of time they wish to remain in employment.
"What we want is a flexible retirement age where people choose and they negotiate with their employers the best time to retire,” he said.
“And of course a lot more people nowadays are interested in flexible retirement, going on with part time work and a part time pension. So there are all sorts of ways we can encourage people working to the maximum according to their choice.”
