Montenegro joins World Health Organisation

The newly-independent Republic of Montenegro has joined the World Halth Organisation, the UN body said today.

The Geneva-based health organisation said it welcomed Montenegro as a member now that it had accepted the organisation’s constitution. Montenegro becomes WHO’s 193rd member.

Montenegro split from Serbia in June after it voted in favour of independence in a national referendum, marking the final break-up of what was once Yugoslavia, a process that began when the federation of six republics disintegrated in violence in the 1990s.

Montenegro was admitted to the United Nations shortly after its independence.
