At least two people killed as dredger sinks in Suez canal

13/09/2006 - 07:36:46
At least two people were killed and six others injured when a large dredger they were working on in the Suez Canal sank early today.

About 50 people were on board the dredger, when it sank at about 3am (1am Irish time).

Egyptian state-run television said authorities were still searching for two of the vessel’s crew members.

Engineers were able to keep the international waterway open by altering the route in which vessels pass through the canal, Egypt’s official news agency MENA reported.

The Canal Authority dredger was working on deepening the canal from 66 feet to 72 feet when it sank, police said.
