McDowell takes on Tánaiste mantle
13/09/2006 - 11:46:18The Minister for Justice Michael McDowell was today officially appointed as Tánaiste.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern signed the necessary statutory instrument to establish his new deputy at Government Buildings before the weekly Cabinet meeting.
Mr McDowell succeeds the Minister for Health Mary Harney, after taking over her position as leader of the junior coalition partner Progressive Democrats on Monday.
He has vowed to remain loyal to the current coalition and intends to double his party’s representation in the Dáil.
