Pensions Ombudsman reports 31% rise in complaints

13/09/2006 - 11:19:47
The Pensions Ombudsman has reported an increase of almost one-third in the number of complaints received by his office last year.

In his latest annual report, Paul Kenny says he and his officials opened 389 new files last year, compared to 297 in 2004.

Launching the report today, Mr Kenny said a "depressing" number of complaints were being made against the construction industry.

He said many employers were failing to register workers in the Construction Federation Operatives' Pension Scheme and others were deducting contributions from workers' pay without putting the money into the scheme.

Mr Kenny said his concerns about the building trade were compounded by the large number of "self-employed" contractors in the industry and the use of companies describing themselves as employment agencies.
