Minister for Justice Michael McDowell was today unveiled as the new leader of the Progressive Democrats.

At a packed press conference in Dublin city centre, the party’s general secretary John Higgins announced he had accepted Mr McDowell’s nomination to lead the PDs into the next general election.

To applause, Mr McDowell paid tribute to former leader and Tánaiste Mary Harney and to the party faithful.

“I want to thank my colleagues in the Progressive Democrat Parliamentary party for the great honour and privilege that they have given me and the trust and responsibility that they have invested in me as the third leader of the Progressive Democrats,” the minister said.

Praising Ms Harney Mr McDowell said: “She, along with the founder of the party Des O’Malley had their necks on the line to bring about a new era in politics.”

And he also paid tribute to Ms Harney’s generosity and selflessness in bringing him back into politics in 1999.
