Irish out of contention at European Masters

08/09/2006 - 19:06:52
Ireland’s Gary Murphy admitted he was “sweating” after securing a par on the last to finish one better than Michelle Wie on 14 over at the Omega European Masters today.

The Irish are out of contention, after Damien McGrane, Stephen Browne and Gary Murphy all missed the cut. Graeme McDowell is the best-placed Irishman on even par after shooting a 71, with Peter Lawrie, Michael Hoey and David Higgins all just making the cut, one shot further back.

Clubhouse leaders Bradley Dredge, Marcel Siem and Andrew McLardy finished the day on seven under par.

Dredge missed four cuts in a row before finishing 18th in Munich last week and revealed: “After Loch Lomond I said to my coach (Claude Harmon) I wanted to work on a couple of things on my swing and he had had a go at it but I missed four cuts in a row.

“Last week I decided to leave the swing alone and go back to what I was doing before and straight away I have seen some results. You’re always trying to improve but it’s not always in the swing, it’s a culmination of everything.”

Pre-tournament favourite and defending champion Sergio Garcia was ominously poised just two shots off the lead, the world number eight carding an eagle, four birdies and four birdies in his 69.

“It was a bit of a roller-coaster,” admitted Garcia, who also owns an apartment overlooking the course.

“I holed from 60ft for an eagle at the first, bogeyed the next three and then birdied the fifth, so after five holes I was level par without having a single par.

“But it was still pretty decent. The course is playing so tough that any time you shoot under par you are still a happy camper.”
