Irish Cancer Society hails new vaccine as ‘historic breakthrough’

The Irish Cancer Society is describing the new vaccine against cervical cancer as an "historic breakthrough".

The drug, known as Gardasil is due to come on the market next month. A second vaccine, called Cevarix, will be launched next year.

Gardasil can be administered in three doses over a six-month period to young girls.

It is expected to cost around €300 for the full course.
