BoI to compensate victims of internet ‘phishing’ scam

05/09/2006 - 09:43:33
Bank of Ireland has compensated a group of customers who were victims of an internet banking scam.

At least nine people were conned out of a total of €160,000, after they gave their bank details to fraudsters on the net.

The scam, known as phishing, occurs when emails, which seem to come from the bank are sent to people asking them to give their bank details and codes for online accounts.

The scam artists can then withdraw money using the account numbers and codes.

The bank has agreed to pay back either all, or most of the cash.
