Woods goes top in Boston

01/09/2006 - 22:55:35
Tiger Woods, 70 under par in winning his last four tournaments, was again the man to beat when he began the Deutsche Bank Championship with a five-under 66 in Boston today.

A bunker shot to five feet on the 543-yard last gave the world number one a one-stroke lead over a group which included Britain’s Justin Rose and American Bob May.

May is the player Woods beat in a play-off for the 2000 US PGA Championship.

Rose, 103rd on the PGA Tour money list, turned in just 31 shots after birdies at the 10th, 14th, 17th and 18th, but although he picked up two more strokes on the front nine he also double-bogeyed the fifth.

Londoner Brian Davis returned a two-under 69 and Ryder Cup Swede Robert Karlsson was on the same mark with three to play.

But Karlsson’s compatriot Carl Pettersson was unable to shine in his last-ditch attempt to impress Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.

A five-over-par 76 left him 137th out of the 156-strong field.

Pettersson, twice a winner in America in the past 12 months, would have been leading the points race if he had been a member of the European Tour from the start of qualifying, but he is almost resigned to missing out.
