Tourists flee as hurricane nears Mexico

Mexican officials ordered 15,000 residents to evacuate to higher ground and tourists fled hotels today, waiting in long queues at the airport and desperately seeking flights home as Hurricane John roared towards the resort of Cabo San Lucas.

The hurricane soaked beaches on the mainland’s Pacific coast yesterday and early today before it began turning toward Baja California, where it was scheduled to nick the peninsula’s southern tip tomorrow.

Officials were preparing to evacuate 10,000 people in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo and at least 5,000 others in the state capital, La Paz.
