Summit planned in effort to restore devolution

30/08/2006 - 08:22:59
The Irish and British governments are believed to be planning a peace summit later this year aimed at restoring devolution in the North.

The two governments are understood to be arranging an intensive round of talks in an effort to get the DUP and Sinn Féin to reach a power-sharing agreement.

The planned talks will apparently take place at a country house in Britain or Scotland in early October.

Dublin and London have already imposed a November 24 deadline for the DUP to agree to share power with Sinn Féin.

They say the Northern Assembly will be shelved indefinitely if no agreement is forthcoming by that date.

They also say a Plan B that could see the Irish Government getting a greater role in Northern affairs will be implemented in the event of no progress.

The DUP, however, is continuing to insist that it will not share power with Sinn Féin due to alleged on-going IRA activity.
