Students to get guide to renting
A new rent book will be launched today to help students avoid the pitfalls as they seek college accommodation.
The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) said the guide would provide students with comprehensive information on accommodation options, tenants’ rights and other information on renting.
A spokesman from the union said: “It is widely recognised that, for new and returning students, the search for affordable rented accommodation poses a significant challenge.”
The USI Rent Book 2006, which was being launched by Housing Minister Noel Ahern, was produced by the union along with the Private Residential Tenancies Board.
The quantity of on-campus accommodation at universities and colleges has increased over the past few years.
The accommodation website Daft.ie has said overall rents have risen this year but are below the peak levels reached in the rental market in 2002.
An average monthly rent for an apartment in Dublin is some €1,150, in Cork and Galway it stands at €850 and in Limerick rents are around €700.
