Out-dated radio equipment 'putting garda lives at risk'
30/08/2006 - 07:41:12The Garda Representative Association has claimed the lives of gardaí are being put at risk because of the force's outdated radio equipment.
The association says four officers who were beaten and kicked by a gang of youths in Cork at the weekend were unable to call for reinforcements because their control centre could not hear what was being said over the radio.
They eventually managed to call for help using their mobile phones.
The Gardaí have been using their existing analogue radio system for 30 years, but it has been due for replacement with a new digital system for a number of years.
