'More effort needed' to achieve poverty reduction targets

The Combat Poverty Agency says the Government is failing to achieve its own targets for tackling poverty in Ireland.

In its latest annual, the agency says the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition is still a long way from meeting its own deadline of reducing consistent poverty level to below 2% by next year.

It says current figures put the number of people living in consistent poverty at around 7%.

The CPA is calling for a more coordinated approach from government departments and anti-poverty agencies, saying there is no point in having objectives on paper if they are never implemented.
