Government launches affordable housing information booklet

30/08/2006 - 18:03:25
The Government has today launched an information booklet to help people who qualify for affordable housing.

Builders have been accused of providing well below the legal obligation of affordable homes during the past four years.

Qualifying criteria are listed in the latest publication, entitled 'Your Affordable Home Handbook', for prospective buyers to see at a glance whether they're eligible.

"We believe that the affordable segment is going to become more and more important for average industrial earners and ordinary workers," said chairman of the Affordable Homes Partnership, Des Geraghty.

"There is a lot of work going on to try and increase the output of both this year and the years ahead to ensure we can grow this segment of the market.

"Hopefully before long we can have the private sector delivering directly to customers a growing amount of affordable accommodation because for many, many people the prices are too high."

The launch was met with distain from the Green Party however, who pointed to what it regards as the Government's poor record on affordable housing provision.

"For Bertie Ahern to launch a guide on affordable housing shows considerable neck,” said Green Party environment spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD. “He is the leader of a Government that has failed miserably to deliver on affordable housing.”

"Of the 10,000 affordable housing units promised under the Sustaining Progress Affordable Housing Initiative, less than 2,000 have so far been delivered.

"You would be forgiven for thinking that with a such a poor record on delivering affordable housing the Taoiseach would be embarrassed to launch a guide explaining to young couples how to apply for houses that his Government has failed to build."
